Restore projects without overwriting anything
Beginner 5 min
Download single projects, a selection or a ZIP from a backup and open them in their apps.
How restoring works
Restoring is deliberately simple and safe: Bundlekeep gives you the original project file, and you open it in its app. Bundlekeep never writes into another app’s storage, so a restore cannot overwrite the projects you are working on now. The app adds the restored project next to them.
1. Open the backup
Choose Backup › Open backup file… (Ctrl+O) and pick your .bundlekeep.json file. Bundlekeep checks every file against its checksum. Your previous backup is kept under Backup › Recent backups….
If the status bar reports files that do not match their checksums, look at those files (marked Changed) before you restore them.
2. Pick what you need
- One project: select it in the list and press Download file in the details. Change File name for restoring first if you want a different name.
- Several projects: tick their checkboxes. The bar above the list shows how many files are selected; press Download or Download as ZIP. The Restore menu has the same commands plus Download all as ZIP.
The ZIP contains the project files without folders, each under its file name in the backup.
3. Open the file in its app
Press Open <app> in the details — for example Open Kerfwise — to open that app’s workspace in a new tab. Then use the app’s own command to open a project file (often in its File or Project menu) and pick the downloaded file. If you downloaded a ZIP, unpack it first.
For a longer restore, export a checklist: Restore › Restore checklist (Markdown) lists every file grouped by app, with a link to each app and every warning. Tick the files off as you go.
Things to know
- Files with a warning may need more than the project file — keep the original Paperwell documents and Reelcraft media.
- Opening an old project in a newer app version usually works; apps convert older projects when they open them. A checksum cannot promise this, so try a restore now and then.
- Restoring the same file twice adds it twice in the app. Delete the extra copy there if you do not need it.
