Tutorial 1 of 6

Your first backup in five minutes

Beginner 5 min

Collect projects from your usefulweb apps into one Bundlekeep backup file and keep it safe.

What you will have at the end

One file, for example my-projects.bundlekeep.json, that holds the projects you made in the usefulweb premium apps — a Kerfwise cabinet, a Hearth household plan, a Signalhouse portfolio and so on. Each project sits inside the backup exactly as the app saved it, with a checksum so you can tell later whether it is still intact.

Bundlekeep works only in your browser. Nothing is uploaded while you collect, review or restore projects.

1. Open Bundlekeep

Open the Bundlekeep workspace. If this is your first visit you see This backup is empty with three buttons: Scan apps, Add files and Open backup file…. Give the backup a name in Backup name, for example “Home projects October”.

Want to look around first? Under Or try an example backup, open the Workshop example backup. It contains real example projects from Kerfwise, Ohmforge, Twinworks and Threadsmith.

2. Collect your projects

You have two ways, and you can combine them:

  • Scan apps asks the other premium apps for the projects they saved in this browser. Keep all apps selected, press Scan selected apps, look through the list and press Add selected projects. The next tutorial explains the scan in detail.
  • Add files takes project files you downloaded from an app earlier, for example a .kerfwise.json or .paperwell.json file. You can also drop files onto the page.

Every project appears as a row in the file list with its app, size and a Checksum badge.

3. Check what you collected

Look at the summary above the list: Files, Apps, Size, Verified, Changed and With warnings. Select a row to see its details on the right. If a file has a warning — for example a Paperwell dossier whose documents live outside the project — read it now; the tutorial on reviewing files explains what to do.

4. Save the backup file

Open the Backup menu and choose Save backup file (or press Ctrl+S). Your browser downloads the .bundlekeep.json file.

The status bar then says Saved in this browser and as a file. While you work, Bundlekeep also keeps the backup in this browser (see Backup › Recent backups…), but that copy disappears when you clear your browser data. Only the downloaded file is a real backup.

5. Keep it somewhere safe

  • Store the file in two places, for example on your computer and on a USB stick or cloud drive.
  • A backup is not encrypted. If it contains personal data, encrypt it first: Help › Related tools links to Local File Encryption Studio, which encrypts files with a password in your browser.
  • Repeat the backup after bigger changes in your apps. Identical projects are skipped when you add them again, so collecting into an existing backup is quick.

Next: Collect projects saved in your apps.
